Prostitution has always been a controversial topic not only in our country but all around the world. Although its been said to be the oldest profession, the social stigma that comes with it makes it taboo. Despite these disapproving views, the majority of individuals in prostitution turn to it in desperate need of money. This negative connotation that comes with prostitution is most likely derived from the thought that sex is an immoral act. Society in this country is slowly becoming more accepting of sex thus we find more and more people becoming open to the idea of decriminalizing prostitution. Nevertheless, the main concerns brought up in debates are human trafficking, rape and sexual crime prevention, health concerns, and labor†¦show more content†¦Researcher Janice G. Raymond explains that after the legalization of prostitution in Germany in the 1980’s, in 1993, 75% of them where foreigners from South American countries (2004). It was suggested that these w ere all poor women from South America that were trafficked by wealthy pimps into Germany through facilitated migration (2004). To add on to the argument against legal prostitution, just five hours away from Germany is another country that legalized prostitution; The Netherlands. In an article in the journal, Gender Issues, Svitlana Batsyukova states that 60% of prostitutes here reported being physically assaulted, 70% experienced verbal threats and 40% experience sexual violence (2007). This brings us to our next debate; rape and sexual crime prevention. One of the main arguments in favor of the legalization of prostitution is the idea that rape and sexual crime rates will decline. Researchers Scott Cunningham and Manisha Shah at UCLA and Baylor University studied the effects of decriminalized indoor prostitution in Rhode Island. In 2003, a District Court Judge’s decision unintentionally created a legal loophole that decriminalized indoor prostitution in the state of Rhode Island (2014).
